I have been pleased to work on behalf of people behalf of patients and families living with muscular dystrophy and related neuromuscular conditions. So, I had no hesitation in signing up to Muscular Dystrophy UK’s ‘Manifesto for Muscle’ containing seven pledges to fight muscle-wasting conditions.
Muscle-wasting conditions such as muscular dystrophy present patients and their families with tremendous challenges. I was honoured to join Muscular Dystrophy UK at its Scottish Conference, last year, and to present the Inspire Awards, which recognise the special efforts of supporters of this very worthwhile charity.
These conditions can affect muscles in the limbs, as well as the muscles of the heart and lungs, sometimes significantly shortening life-expectancy. With few exceptions, there are currently no effective treatments or cures available.
I am pleased to recommit to the fight against muscle-wasting conditions, not only to allow people to live as independently as possible, but also to improve the quality of life of those affected, and to enable fast access to potential treatments.
